Psychological Testing

 Psychological Assessments Now Available

Psychological testing, also known as a psychological assessment, is a tool used by psychologists to diagnose and guide treatment.  The evaluation is designed to measure a wide range of mental, emotional, and behavioral characteristics to provide insight into an individual’s functioning.  Assessments are tailored to the specific purpose, whether for clinical diagnosis, educational planning, job placement, legal proceedings, or personal growth. This can help us better understand how we learn best, academic areas in need of intervention as well as how to improve interpersonal relationships, emotions, and thinking patterns.  Many common mental health symptoms can be attributed to several different sources and psychological testing can provide a diagnosis and recommendations for treatment. We often use these helpful tools at Southeast Child & Family Guidance to connect our patients with what they need to live healthier lives. These evaluations are conducted using standardized tests, interviews, and behavioral observations.

Psychological testing typically takes place in three phases.  During the first contact, our clinical psychologist, Dr. Angela Beachkofsky, PhD, meets with her clients for an initial in-depth interview to gather a thorough history, discuss the reason for the evaluation, and expectations about the testing process.  During the second phase, the psychologist will administer the tests. Testing is usually done in three, two-hour morning sessions. This may include a combination of computerized tests along with oral and written measures.  Tests chosen will vary depending on the client’s needs and referral requests.  During the third phase, Dr. Beachkofsky will meet with the examinee or parents/guardians to review the test results and recommendations that are summarized in a formal report.

An assessment may be required for private school admissions. The evaluation is an important step to aid in identifying  a child’s cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses to ensure a good fit for the student as well as help the admission teams get to know the applicant better.
